How do you get a Mercedes-Benz Certificate of Conformity for a UK import?

We obtain it for you as part of the import. A duplicate Certificate of Conformity is only available for European-market passenger cars built after 1996 that have not been modified, and it usually costs from £120 to around £385, depending on the make, model and year. You need it to register a Mercedes under 10 years old from the EU; an older car needs proof of age instead.

1. When you need a Mercedes CoC

A car under 10 years old needs proof of vehicle approval before the DVLA will register it. For a car registered in the EU, that proof is the European Certificate of Conformity (GOV.UK). Over 10 years old, a car needs no approval (GOV.UK exemptions list), so the CoC stops mattering and the date of manufacture is what counts.

2. Getting a Mercedes CoC, and what it costs

We obtain the CoC for you as part of the import. All we need from you is the VIN and the country where the car is registered. A CoC usually costs from £120 to around £385, depending on the make, model and year. The Mercedes CoC is supplied in German.

3. What Mercedes will not supply

• Cars built for other markets. The CoC is for cars made for the European market. A US or Japanese-market Mercedes under 10 years old needs IVA instead.
• Cars built in 1996 or earlier. Duplicates are for European cars manufactured after 1996.
• Modified cars. Mercedes says it cannot supply documents for a car changed since it left the factory.

4. Older and classic Mercedes: proving the age

For a car over 10 years old, the DVLA needs the date of manufacture. It normally takes it from the original foreign registration document; if that is missing, it may accept other proof of the manufacture date, such as a dating letter (GOV.UK). We obtain the dating letter for you with the VIN and the country of registration. A dating letter usually costs from about £60 to £90 through an owners' club, or from about £120 to around £300 directly from the manufacturer. For a Pagoda or an R107, see our model guides.

5. Left-hand drive cars

A left-hand drive car under 10 years old from the EU needs a certificate of GB conversion IVA as well as the CoC (GOV.UK). A right-hand drive car with a CoC does not. More in our Certificate of Conformity guide.
