How do you import a Toyota Supra Mk4 to the UK?
A Mk4 Supra built more than 30 years ago (from 1993 to 1996, depending on the exact build date) is a model long out of production, so an original car can come in at 0% duty and 5% import VAT as a collector’s vehicle. Later cars pay 20% VAT, with 0% duty if you prove Japanese origin. Most Supras are Japanese imports, and many are tuned, which is what decides the rate.

1. UK cars and Japanese cars
Toyota sold the Mk4 Supra in the UK from 1993 to 1996 (Toyota UK). Classic & Sports Car records that production ran until 2002, that only 673 UK cars were sold, and that Japan took around 70% of production (Classic & Sports Car). So most Supras on offer are Japanese imports, and Japanese cars differ: there was a non-turbo version, and details from the lights to the final drive ratio were different.

The collector's rate under heading 9705 needs a car over 30 years old, in its original state and of a model no longer in production, and originality is the catch with Supras. Classic & Sports Car notes that few remain unmodified because they are so tunable, and that many have had very hard lives. It also records that most Supras were built in 1993 and 1994, which is good news for the collector's rate, as long as the car is original. A heavily tuned 1994 car pays the normal rates, not 5%.

The export certificate dates the car for the DVLA and records past odometer readings, the best defence against clocked mileage (Andrews Japanese Cars). It is valid for six months from issue (Japan Customs). Auction sheets help filter cars but grade cosmetics rather than what is underneath (JDMBUYSELL). Over 10 years old, a Supra needs no vehicle approval (GOV.UK), but a km/h speedometer needs to show mph too (regulation 35 of the Construction and Use Regulations).
