Importing a classic motorcycle to the UK works much like a car. A bike over 30 years old pays 0% duty and just 5% VAT. You file NOVA with HMRC, pass a test if the bike needs one, then register with the DVLA. Here it is in plain words, with the bits that are different for bikes.
The rates on a classic bike
Age is the key. A motorcycle over 30 years old, still original, pays 0% duty and 5% VAT. A newer bike pays 20% VAT plus a small duty: about 6% for engines over 250cc, or 8% for smaller ones. So the 30-year mark is where the real saving is.
| Bike | Duty | VAT |
|---|---|---|
| Over 30 years, original condition | 0% | 5% |
| Under 30 years, over 250cc | ~6% | 20% |
| Under 30 years, 250cc or less | ~8% | 20% |
Modify the bike and you can lose the classic rate. An engine swap or modern suspension can void the historic status. Keep it original.
The bit that is different: MSVA, not IVA
Cars use a test called IVA. Bikes use a slightly different one called MSVA (Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval). The good news for classics: a bike over 10 years old is usually exempt and does not need MSVA at all. Only newer bikes without EU or GB approval need the test.
The steps to import your bike
- Ship it. Use a specialist bike shipper who crates it properly. A bike bouncing loose in a container is a bad idea.
- Clear customs and file NOVA. Tell HMRC within 14 days of arrival. This must clear before the DVLA step.
- Pay VAT and any duty. 5% for a classic over 30, more for a newer bike.
- MSVA or MOT if needed. Over 10 years skips MSVA. Over 40 years is MOT-exempt too; 30 to 40 still needs an MOT.
- Register with the DVLA. Send the form and papers, get a UK number and a V5C.
Classic bikes often have no original registration document. That is fine. A dating letter from the marque's owners club is usually accepted by the DVLA as proof of the year. Make sure the VIN or frame number matches the NOVA exactly, or the whole thing stalls.
